Harm Reduction as Inclusive Substance Abuse Treatment
This paper discusses harm reduction and how its strategies can be life saving for people who use drugs. Where punitive drug policies have condemned and stigmatized drug users, harm reduction strategies value the autonomy and respect the personal rights of those who use drugs. The harm reduction approach shifts away from traditional, abstinence-based treatment models of addiction, and is instead focused on reducing the negative consequences that accompany risky behaviors such as drug use. The use of psychedelics and psychedelic harm reduction will also be considered as well as the lack of inclusivity in addiction treatment programs and psychedelic research.
